October 2nd, 2011, New Delhi: Bringing cheer to thousands of Indian facebook users, Mahatma Gandhi created a facebook account earlier today. A spokesperson for facebook confirmed that the profile is in fact original. "Despite our best efforts, even our best people could not trace the country from where the account was created. This has never happened. The profile indeed appears to have been created by Mr.Gandhi from heaven" he said.
The profile info mentioned his profession as 'freedom fighter'. The 'about me' read "Hi guys, This is MK Gandhi. Here to stay in touch with friends and followers." Favourite quotations field had "Be the change you want to see in the world". The other fields in the profile were 'Movies: Gandhi', 'Books: My experiments with truth', 'Music: Raghupati raghava rajaram'. Soon after the mahatma created his facebook profile, he created 2 pages: 'Satyagraha' and 'Ahimsa'. But sadly, at the time of writing this report only 1 facebook user by name 'Kisan Baburao Hazare' had liked these pages.
Within a few hours of the father of the nation creating a facebook account, the news started spreading like wild fire and friend requests started pouring in. At the time of writing this report, the Mahatma had 1176 confirmed friends and 2341 subscribers. Some of the posts on his wall were: "Hellooooo Bapu, I read about you in history :-) :-) :-)" by Kunal Kumar Roy, a class IX student. "Hey man, you are an awesome guy" by Ashutosh, a 2nd year mass media student. Shruthi, a student from Mumbai wrote: "How does it feel to have your picture printed on so many currency notes? I soooooooo wish my face gets printed on at least 1 currency note someday..lol :D" Anirban, a student at Film & Television Institute of India (Pune) wrote: "Hello sir, got to know about you from the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. You were one of main characters in the film. You must have been a great person otherwise you would not have been cast alongside Sanjay Dutt by my inspiration, guru and role-model Rajkumar Hirani sir."
We sent a message to Mahatma Gandhi asking him about his experience on facebook so far. He sent a detailed reply. He wrote: "FB is cool. It's great to reach out to so many people so fast. The freedom struggle would have been so much easier with sites like facebook and twitter. It would have been so very easy to spread awareness amongst the masses and mobilise people for the struggle against the British rule. With facebook we could have achieved freedom much before we actually got it in 1947. Sigh! Anyway, better late than never. I have been receiving a lot of friend requests. I am having a tough time managing all the requests. I received requests from some senior congress leaders by name Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Initially I was excited as I thought these would be my great grandchildren. But I later discovered that they have nothing to do with either my family or my ideology."
We then sent a message to the Mahatma asking if he got any friend requests from ministers like P.Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal etc. He replied: "No, but I got a request from one Dr.Manmohan Singh. I did a bit of googling and got to know that he is the incumbent prime minister and that he has been in power for the last 7 years. I accepted the request immediately. He was online on facebook chat, so I pinged him and asked about him, the political scenario in India etc. Despite being online for the next 1 hour, he never replied."
