Why should kids have all the fun? (Published in 'The Statesman' on 09/05/12)

IN a not so surprising development, the former governor of a southern state, who had also been chief minister of a northern state, has welcomed the latest CD scandal involving a now deposed, high-profile party spokesperson.

Greatly excited by the recent developments, the former governor read out a statement to the media yesterday. It went thus, “I can’t express how happy I am to know of your involvement in this scandalous CD. You have followed in my footsteps. Welcome to the elite club. I am really proud of you. I know that people will unfairly criticise you but only a seasoned veteran like me can empathise with you. I have been there, done that. You might have lost your party posts but you have gained the coveted membership of our group. Welcome to the fold. We need such dynamic, brilliant people in our group. I just had a word with our core committee member, Swami Nityananda. He was extremely elated to know about the recent developments. He felt so nostalgic thinking about his own CD. I also got a chance to speak to another important member of our group, Sanjay Joshi. He was also extremely ecstatic to know of your admission into the elite club. You are now joining a handful of highly motivated individuals in an exclusive group where only performance speaks.”

However, the former spokesperson was not very happy with the statement issued by the former governor. When asked for his reaction, he said, “What is this nonsensical statement welcoming me to this elite club? I am already quite distressed. His statement is adding insult to injury. The tone of the statement suggests this is like India entering the elite club of nations by launching Agni V. This is ridiculous. I am very disappointed.”
In related news, the Union information and broadcasting ministry issued a notice to Sony channel asking it to refrain from screening the CD showing the former spokesperson during daytime hours. Sony was scheduled to telecast the CD at noon and 8 pm on Sunday. “However, if Sony TV wishes to show the CD, it should do so after 11 pm,” the notice clarified.

Detailing the reason for its directive, the ministry said, “Why should kids have all the fun? Such wholesome family entertainment should be telecast at a time when everyone in the family is present and can enjoy the contents.”

When contacted, Sony TV said no spokesperson was available for comment. The channel ran a ticker saying, “For unavoidable reasons we regret to inform viewers the CD that you were all eager to watch will not be telecast on Sunday. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.”
