IIM girl who is engaged to a guy from a tier-2 b-school hailed as a revolutionary

In a graceful display of magnanimity, a girl from Indian Institute of Management – Lucknow has agreed to get married to a guy from a lesser known b-school. Bucking the trend of IIM girls strictly getting married to only IIM –Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta guys, Shruthi from IIM Lucknow is all set to enter wedlock with Abhishek from a tier 2 b-school. People from different quarters have hailed this magnanimous gesture. Shruthi is already being praised as a ‘trendsetter’ and a ’revolutionary’. We spoke to Shruthi to find out the reasons behind this unconventional decision. This is what she had to say: “Well, when my parents were looking for a groom for me, initially they restricted the search only to IIM-A,B,C guys. I registered on forums like iimjobs.com. I even posted on several discussion forums in several places seeking online applications from qualified candidates. At one point in time, when I could not get sufficient number of applicants from IIM A,B,C, I even relaxed the criterion to include IIML guys. But despite my best efforts, I could not find a suitable match. Female population in IIMs is gradually increasing and hence it is difficult to find single males. Hence I had to start looking at guys from lesser known b-schools. Finally I met Abhishek from ABC institute of management. It was totally worth the wait. We are truly in love. Anyway ABC institute of management is also doing reasonably well in b-school rankings and it will only get better with time.”

Though Shruthi’s generous act has won her many admirers, there are some critics too. Akansha, an IIMA graduate who turned down a lucrative job offer with an investment bank to start her own online portal - iimmatrimony.com is upset. When asked about Shruthi’s case, she said: “It’s strange, It’s unacceptable. It’s against established traditions. It’s unconventional. Shruthi is a heretic. She has set a wrong precedent.”

One guy from a tier 2 b-school, who wished to remain anonymous, aptly summarized: “We need a paradigm shift in the arranged marriage market and Shruthi’s case is really a harbinger of hope for thousands of young men like me”
