Cabinet approves 51% FDI in Indian adult film industry (This was published in 'The Statesman' on 21/12/11)

In a historic decision, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved 51 per cent foreign direct investment in the Indian adult film industry. This is the latest in a series of important Cabinet decisions taken recently. The government justified this move saying that allowing FDI in the adult film industry would improve the overall supply chain efficiency of flesh trade by eliminating middlemen. The move has evoked mixed response.

Many citizens’ groups have welcomed this move and the president of one said: “This is a very important day for me personally and also for my group. I have seen this day in my dreams. This move would bring in global best practices in the adult film industry to India. It would lead to better technology being adopted from abroad which in turn would result in better quality films. Ultimately, the consumer would benefit. God is great.”

Sunny Leone, one of the participants in TV reality show Big Boss 5 also welcomed this move and hoped to start shooting in India soon. ”I love India and Indian culture”, she said. Mr Narayan Dutt Tiwari, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, was apparently thrilled and excited. “A historic day. Never thought I would see this day in my lifetime,” he tweeted. Godman Swami Nithyananda was ecstatic on hearing the news and was found happily dancing in his ashram with some female devotees.

As expected, the Left parties strongly opposed the decision. The CPI-M general secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, strongly condemned this move saying: “This is totally unacceptable. Thousands of Indian sex workers would lose their jobs as the foreign players in the adult film industry would employ foreigners. We will oppose it in Parliament tooth and nail.”

The president of a sex workers’ welfare association also expressed concern over the recent government decision. The West Bengal chief minister said that she would oppose FDI in Indian adult film industry but would not withdraw support and destabilise the government.

The Opposition was stronger in Kerala which has been a pioneer of adult films in the country. The CPI-M has called for a month-long bandh in the state. When a spokesperson for the party was asked if normal life would be affected because of the bandh, he said: “Bandh is normal in Kerala. In fact, normal life is affected on non-bandh days.”

Later in the day, the Prime Minister, the home minister and other members of the Union Cabinet along with the President of India strongly condemned the AMRI hospital fire tragedy and the hooch deaths in Kolkata. They conveyed their advance wishes for Christmas and New Year and also their advance condemnation of all terror attacks, accidents, riots, starvation deaths, farmer suicides, natural disasters etc. set to occur in 2012.
