Digvijay Singh feels threatened by Kapil Sibal's notoriety (This was published in 'The Statesman' on 14/12/11)

The undisputed king of comedy in Indian politics Mr.Digvijay Singh is feeling terribly threatened by the growing notoriety of Mr.Kapil Sibal. Soon after Mr. Sibal made the statement about monitoring and moderating activity on social networking sites, there was widespread condemnation online. People cracked jokes. Many comic strips were made. TV debates happened about the stupidity of Mr.Sibal's statement and the impracticality of his suggestion. We have learnt that all this attention that Mr.Sibal has got has greatly upset Mr.Digvijay Singh. Apparently, Mr.Digvijay Singh was particularly disturbed by one development. Soon after Mr.Kapil Sibal made the statement, #kapilsibalisanidiot started trending on Twitter and people started displaying ‘Kapil Sibal is an idiot’ as their Facebook status message to show their disapproval of Mr.Sibal’s idea. Mr.Digvijay Singh was terribly depressed over this. “How can someone overshadow my popularity overnight?” read one of his tweets. In another tweet, he said: “Painful to see how people forget all the wonderful remarks that I have made over the years and switch loyalties in a jiffy :(”

We contacted Mr.Digvijay Singh to get his reaction. This is what he had to say: “Yes, I am dejected. No one can become a superstar overnight. In fact, let me tell you something. The idea of pre-screening online content originally belongs to me. I shared this thought with Mr.Sibal at a dinner hosted by the PM. Mr.Kapil Sibal should have at least had the decency to give credit to me for coming up with this idea. Actually, my idea was much broader and more exhaustive. I had suggested deploying cameras in each household in India to identify people making anti-Sonia or anti-Rahul statements. So, if Mr.Sibal makes a statement in the near future, about installing cameras in homes, you know who the idea belongs to. I am also unhappy with all the attention Shri Anna Hazare has got for his ‘flogging of alcoholics’ remark and for sarcastically expressing his displeasure over Mr.Pawar being slapped only once. I also envy Harvinder Singh (the guy who slapped Mr.Pawar). Sometimes, I feel that I should have done all these things to maintain my image – brand Digvijay. But let me remind everyone once again – Do not forget the consistently brilliant statements that I have been making over the years. Infamy does not come in a day. You have to earn it over a period of time, with consistency.”

We asked some other leaders about Mr.Kapil Sibal’s statement on pre-screening of content on social networking sites. Shri Anna Hazare was of the opinion that Facebook should be brought under Lokpal. Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati felt that Facebook should be divided into 4 for better monitoring and administration. She said that the UP assembly would soon pass a resolution to this effect. She also mooted the idea of creating online parks on Facebook where people can hang out. She insisted that elephant statues should be displayed everywhere in these online parks. She strongly felt that 22.5% of Facebook accounts should be reserved for SCs/STs.

In related news, Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh said in a conference on economic reforms that after pension, insurance reforms, reforming Digvijay Singh is also on his agenda.
