Man mercilessly gang raped in Delhi

In a bizarre incident, a man in his mid-twenties was gang raped by 4 girls on the outskirts of Delhi in the wee hours of Friday. This news has shaken the city which has already gained notoriety as the rape capital of India. Navish (name changed on request) who works in one of the BPO firms in Gurgaon was on his way home around 4 AM on Friday. An inconsolable Navish narrated his harrowing experience: “I always walk to my work spot as I stay close to my office. A gang of girls, generally seen travelling in their Audi Q7, all in their twenties, have been harassing me for quite some time. They used to make obscene gestures and pass lewd comments. But I never responded. I quietly ignored them. On this fateful day, the girls approached me asking me to be intimate with them. I refused. They were in an inebriated condition. They dragged me into their car and took me away. I was molested and raped repeatedly. I cried for help. I screamed but no one came to my rescue. Finally I was dumped in a deserted place in New Delhi around 7 AM. I noted down the car registration number and went to file a complaint with the police. The police refused to register an FIR apparently because they were daughters of central ministers and industrialists. I am not rich but that does not mean I have no dignity. Are the laws in this country different for the rich and the poor? I want justice. I will approach the National Commission for Men. I have lost my dignity. I have lost everything. My life has turned upside down in a day.”

This incident has sent shockwaves across the nation. Support has been pouring in for Navish from several parts of the country. NDTV has launched a campaign in support of the victim, by name, “Justice for Navish”. A candle light march to India Gate has been organized next Sunday to express solidarity with Navish.

Shruthi, a social activist, regretted the sad state of affairs in the national capital. She said: “Previously Delhi was unsafe for women. Now it is not even safe for men. The only people who are safe in Delhi are the politicians as many of them are in Tihar jail which has good security. The prisoners enjoy a lifestyle that is much better than most Indians as they get proper food, shelter and security. Prisons are much safer than cities like Mumbai which has witnessed 13 terror strikes in the last 20 years. Has there ever been a terror strike in a prison?” asked Shruthi bringing an interesting perspective to the issue.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has been receiving flak over the incident. Also her remark on the incident has been criticized by different political parties. She had said: “Injustice has been done. There’s no doubt about that. But the victim should have been cautious too. A young man in his twenties shouldn’t have walked alone at such unearthly hours. Also the police should investigate where he was exactly raped. If it was in Gurgaon, then it is not my jurisdiction.” The BJP has strongly criticized the statement. The BJP spokesperson Mr.Rajiv Pratap Rudy said: “We strongly condemn the insensitive remark by Sheila Dikshit. It shows the apathy and lack of concern on the part of congress towards the plight of the common ‘man’.”

Many critics pointed out that the national capital is well on its way to becoming ‘the rape capital of the world’. Mr.Digvijay Singh, the Congress general secretary refuted this saying: “There is still a long way to go before Delhi gains that status. The police will investigate all possible angles including whether the accused girls have an RSS background. Nothing can be ruled out now.”
